Chapter 1 — The Creation
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was empty and covered in darkness, and the Spirit of God was moving over the waters.
God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, so He separated the light from the darkness. He called the light Day and the darkness Night.
Then God created the sky and separated the waters. He gathered the waters together so that dry land appeared. He called the dry land Earth and the waters Seas. God also created plants, trees, and every kind of vegetation.
God then created the sun, the moon, and the stars to give light to the earth and to mark the days, seasons, and years.
After that, God created the creatures of the sea and the birds of the sky. He blessed them and told them to multiply and fill the earth and the seas.
Then God created animals that live on the land. Finally, God created human beings in His own image, male and female. He blessed them and gave them responsibility over the earth and its creatures.
God looked at everything He had made, and He saw that it was very good.
On the seventh day, God finished His work of creation and rested from all His work.
2 — Adam and Eve
The heavens and the earth were completed, along with everything in them. On the seventh day, God finished His work of creation and rested. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because He rested from His work.
Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed life into him. The man became a living being. God placed the man in the Garden of Eden, a beautiful garden filled with trees and plants.
In the middle of the garden were the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God told the man that he could eat from the trees of the garden, but he must not eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
God saw that the man was alone and said that it was not good for him to be alone. So God brought the animals and birds to the man, and the man gave names to them. But none of the animals was a suitable companion for him.
Then God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. He took part of the man’s side and made a woman from it. God brought the woman to the man.
The man said that she was part of him, and he called her woman. For this reason, a man leaves his father and mother and becomes united with his wife, and they become one.
The man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed
Chapter 3 — The Fall of Man
Now the serpent was more clever than any other creature that God had made. The serpent spoke to the woman and asked whether God had really told them not to eat from the trees in the garden.
The woman explained that they could eat from the trees, except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God had warned them that if they ate from it, they would die.
The serpent told the woman that they would not die. Instead, it said that their eyes would be opened and that they would become like God, knowing good and evil.
The woman looked at the fruit and saw that it was desirable. She took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
Then their eyes were opened, and they realized that they were naked. They became ashamed and made coverings for themselves from leaves.
When they heard God walking in the garden, they hid from Him. God called to the man and asked where he was.
The man said that he was afraid because he was naked, so he hid. God asked whether he had eaten from the tree that He had commanded him not to eat from.
The man blamed the woman, saying that she had given him the fruit. The woman then said that the serpent had deceived her.
God spoke to the serpent and declared that there would be conflict between the serpent and the woman and between their descendants.
God then told the woman that life would bring pain and difficulty. He told the man that because he had disobeyed, the ground would become difficult to work, and he would have to work hard to grow food.
The man named his wife Eve because she would become the mother of all living people.
God made clothing for Adam and Eve and covered them. Then God sent them out of the Garden of Eden so that they could no longer eat from the Tree of Life.
God placed cherubim and a flaming sword at the entrance of the garden to guard the way to the Tree of Life.
Chapter 4 — Cain and Abel
Adam and Eve had a son named Cain. Later, they had another son named Abel. Cain became a farmer, while Abel became a shepherd who cared for sheep.
When the time came, Cain brought some of the fruits of the land as an offering to the Lord. Abel also brought an offering, choosing some of the best portions from his flock.
The Lord accepted Abel and his offering, but He did not accept Cain and his offering. Cain became very angry and upset.
The Lord spoke to Cain and warned him not to let anger control him. God told Cain that he had the choice to do what was right.
Later, Cain spoke to his brother Abel while they were in the field. Cain attacked his brother, and Abel died.
The Lord asked Cain where his brother was. Cain answered that he did not know and asked whether he was responsible for his brother.
God told Cain that Abel’s blood had cried out from the ground. Because of what Cain had done, the ground would no longer give him its strength as before. Cain would become a restless wanderer on the earth.
Cain was afraid that someone might kill him. But God placed a mark on Cain and promised that anyone who killed him would face punishment.
Cain left the presence of the Lord and settled in another land. He later built a city and named it after his son Enoch.
Adam and Eve later had another son named Seth. Seth also had a son, and his descendants continued the family line.
At the end of the chapter, people began to call on the name of the Lord.
Chapter 5 — The Family Line of Adam
This is the record of the family line of Adam.
When God created humanity, He made them in His own likeness. He created them male and female and blessed them.
Adam had a son named Seth, who was born in Adam’s likeness. Adam lived for many years and had other sons and daughters.
Seth also had a son named Enosh. The family line continued from one generation to another.
One of the important people in this family line was Enoch. Enoch lived faithfully with God. He walked with God, and then he was no longer on earth because God took him away.
After Enoch came Methuselah. Methuselah became known for living an exceptionally long life.
Later came Lamech, who had a son named Noah. When Noah was born, Lamech said that his son would bring comfort from the difficult work and hardship that people experienced because of the condition of the ground.
Noah later became an important person in God’s story.
The chapter continues the family line from Adam through Seth and eventually to Noah. It shows how one generation followed another and prepares the story for what happens in the next chapters.
