Georgia grabbed my phone. “I’ve got an idea.”

She typed a message and handed it back.

“Georgia has also requested that I obtain the moon. Please advise.”

“I’ve got an idea.”

My boss didn’t answer for two minutes.

Then:

“Um, well, use your judgment.”

I laughed so hard the photographer had to take our picture again!

By the end of prom, Georgia and I were actually having a great time.

My boss didn’t answer for two minutes.

We danced badly, ate too many cupcakes, and watched Madison convince the DJ to play an old disco song.

Georgia taught me a dance move that made me look like I was fighting invisible bees.

When we finally left, she was still laughing.

“Okay,” I said as we reached the car. “I’ve survived prom. Can you tell me what’s happening now?”

Georgia taught me a dance move.

My date stopped smiling. “There’s something Dad hasn’t announced at work.”

My stomach tightened again. “Please don’t keep me in suspense, Georgia.”

“He’s opening another location.”

I blinked. “Another warehouse?”

She nodded. “And he needs someone to manage it.”

“Please don’t keep me in suspense.”

I stared at her. “Okay.”

“He’s been watching several employees. But you’re the one he’s most interested in.”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Then I managed to squeak out, “Me?”

“Yes.”

“But I’m practically new?!”

“And?”

I couldn’t speak.

“I still call my mom when I don’t know how long to cook chicken!”

Georgia laughed. “That doesn’t mean you’re bad at your job.”

I shook my head. “Why didn’t he just tell me?”

“Because he’s convinced you’re too young to recognize your own potential.”

I thought about the questions Sheldon had asked over the past year.

“Why didn’t he just tell me?”

The customer complaints.
The delivery problems.
The staff schedules.
“Those questions he kept asking were all tests?”

“Some of them. He wanted to know how you thought.”

“And tonight?”

“Some of them.”

Georgia sighed. “He thought an awkward social situation would show whether you could stay calm when someone made unreasonable demands.”

I stared at her. “Your father turned prom into a management interview?!”

“That was his plan.”

“That’s ridiculous!”

“I told him!”

Then I remembered something.

“That’s ridiculous!”

“Wait. What happened to your original date?”

Georgia smiled. “Oliver’s my friend. We were supposed to go together, but then Dad started talking about this plan and asked if Oliver could go with his other friends instead.”

“So he didn’t exactly back out?”

“What happened to your original date?”

I rubbed my face. “Everyone knew except me.”

“Pretty much.”

Georgia pulled out her phone. “And I already told Dad what I think.”

She showed me her message.

“Everyone knew except me.”
