I remember the ambulance.

She was staring at me with frightened eyes.

“Mommy, are you going to leave me?”

I immediately pulled her into my arms.

“Never, sweetheart. Never.”

But as I held her, I realized something.

Daniel hadn’t finished telling me the truth.

And whatever was waiting at that address might finally explain what happened during the hours after the accident.

I looked at the small wooden box again.

There was still one thing inside.

A tiny silver key.

And attached to it was a note.

The truth is in the place where Emma’s final photograph was taken.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew exactly where that was.

The hospital.

And I had no idea that the next morning, one conversation with an elderly nurse would reveal a secret that had been hidden from me for seven years.

To be continued…PART 3 — THE SECRET IN THE HOSPITAL ROOM

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph of Daniel standing beside Emma’s hospital bed.

Why had he never told me?

Why had he kept that photograph for seven years?

And what did he mean when he wrote that there was one more person I needed to find?

At six the next morning, Lily came downstairs wearing her favorite yellow sweater.

“Mommy, are we going somewhere?”

I nodded.

“We need to visit someone.”

She looked at the wooden box sitting on the kitchen table.

“Is it about Daddy?”

I knelt in front of her.

“Yes, sweetheart. I think your daddy left us something important.”

After dropping Lily at school, I drove straight to the hospital.

The building looked exactly as I remembered it.

The same glass entrance.

The same long corridors.

The same smell of disinfectant.

I walked toward the reception desk and asked whether anyone remembered a patient named Emma from seven years earlier.

The receptionist searched the old records.

A few minutes later, she called an elderly nurse from the administration office.

Her name was Margaret.

When she entered the room, she looked at me for several seconds.

Then her eyes widened.

“Sarah?”

I nodded.

She slowly approached me.

“Oh, sweetheart. I wondered if you would ever come back.”

My heart began racing.

“You remember me?”

Margaret took my hands.

“I remember that night very well.”

I showed her the photograph.

The moment she saw Daniel standing beside Emma’s bed, her expression changed.

She looked toward the closed office door.

Then she whispered something I will never forget.

“Daniel promised he would never tell you unless you were ready.”

I felt my knees weaken.
