“To change your medical records after the accident. He wanted everyone to believe you had suffered permanent memory damage.”
Lauren’s voice trembled.
“But I was unconscious for months.”
“Yes. But when you finally woke up, you remembered things. You asked for your purse. You asked for your son. And you kept asking about a silver USB drive.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“What happened to her belongings?”
Evelyn looked toward the agents.
Then she whispered:
“Your father sent someone to collect them.”
Lauren’s heart began pounding.
“Who?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Vanessa.”
The room became completely silent.
“She came into the hospital wearing a nurse’s uniform. She took your purse, your jewelry, and the photograph you kept inside it.”
Lauren felt sick.
“My ultrasound picture?”
Evelyn nodded.
“But she didn’t find the USB drive.”
Ethan leaned closer.
“Where is it?”
Evelyn looked directly at Lauren.
“Your little boy saved it.”
Lauren froze.
“What?”
“Your son was visiting you that afternoon. He had your ultrasound picture in his little backpack. When Vanessa tried to take it, he refused to give it to her.”
Tears immediately filled Lauren’s eyes.
Noah.
Her little Noah.
He had protected the only evidence capable of destroying her father.
10:25 a.m. — The Caldwell Estate
Ethan returned to the mansion with Lauren and Noah.
The surviving staff were gathered near the kitchen.
Noah was playing quietly with his stuffed bear when Lauren knelt beside him.
“Sweetheart, Mommy wants to ask you something.”
He looked up.
“Yes, Mommy?”
“Do you remember the little silver thing you found in Mommy’s picture?”
Noah’s eyes widened.
“The shiny thing?”
Lauren nodded quickly.
“Where is it?”
Noah suddenly smiled.
“I kept it safe.”
He ran upstairs before anyone could stop him.
A few minutes later, he returned carrying a small blue backpack.
He opened it carefully and removed a folded ultrasound photograph.
Behind the photograph was a tiny silver USB drive.
Lauren burst into tears.
“Oh, Noah…”
She hugged him tightly.
“I love you so much.”
Noah looked confused.
“Did I do good, Mommy?”
