“If you believe you’re doing too much, you can ask for a fairer arrangement. If you’re unhappy, you can leave. You cannot threaten someone for wanting those same choices.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“Now you’re making me sound like a bad person!”

Margaret glanced at the ledger.

Then she looked straight at her daughter.

“Are you not?”

Silence filled the kitchen.

Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no words came.

Finally, she whispered, “I can’t believe you’d say that to me.”

Margaret’s expression softened.

“Neither can I. But I can’t pretend this is right.”

For a moment, I thought the confrontation was over.

Then Vanessa turned to Ethan.

“Fine. I’ll stop charging you.”

Ethan didn’t answer.

She spread her hands.

“There. Problem solved.”

I watched him carefully.

A few weeks earlier, that offer might have been enough to keep him there.

Now he looked more tired than relieved.

“Vanessa,” he said, “what happens the next time we disagree?”

She frowned.

“What?”

“If I say something you don’t like, will you threaten to tell my coworkers again?”

“Stop bringing that up.”

“That’s my point.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“You’re really going to throw away our relationship over dinner?”

Ethan shook his head.

“It stopped being about dinner when I became afraid to tell you no.”

He turned toward Margaret and me.

“I need you both to understand something.”

His voice trembled, but he kept going.

“I didn’t invite you because I wanted you to fight for me.”

I sat very still.

“I invited you because I was starting to believe I really was selfish. I needed to say everything out loud, where nobody could change what I’d said afterward.”

He looked at Vanessa.

“I’ve spent weeks trying to keep the peace. But I dread coming home. I check my bank balance before I open the refrigerator.”

Vanessa looked away.

“I don’t want to live like that anymore.”

I wanted to tell him what to do.

Instead, I waited.

He had brought us here to hear his decision, not make it for him.

“I didn’t invite you here to decide whether I should leave,” he said. “I invited you because I’ve already decided.”

Vanessa went pale.

“What?”

“We’re done.”

She stared at him.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I am.”

She looked at Margaret, then at me.

Neither of us intervened.

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Fine. But don’t come crying when everyone at your office hears how you treated me.”

I saw Ethan flinch.

My heart pounded.

He had admitted that this threat frightened him.

Now she was making it again, in front of both mothers.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he picked up the ledger.

“If someone asks me, I’ll tell them the truth.”

Vanessa sneered.

“You think they’ll believe you?”

“I don’t know.”

He folded the paper.

“But I’m not paying you to keep quiet anymore.”

Margaret stood. “Vanessa, that’s enough.”

Her daughter turned on her.

“Whose side are you on?”

“I’m on the side of treating people right.”
