He admitted he might have told Emma that Iris left swimming to him. Iris reminded him how often she had offered to attend practices or help with the schedule. Each time, he said everything was handled, and once he told her Gia liked having something that belonged only to the two of them.
Jamie finally explained why. After the divorce, Gia spent more school nights with Iris, and he felt like he was always catching up. Swimming became the one place where he knew everything.
He also confessed that he enjoyed hearing Emma praise him as a devoted father. He never corrected her assumptions about Iris, and that silence gave the swim coach shaming room to spread from Gia’s body to her family.
Iris told him she believed he never meant for any of this to happen. But it had happened, and Gia was the one paying for it. She asked him to truly listen to their daughter, not to ask her to make him feel better.
Holding the Coach Accountable for Swim Coach Shaming
On Monday, Iris contacted Bonnie, the program director. She shared what she had witnessed herself and what Gia had told her afterward.
Bonnie listened carefully to every detail of the swim coach shaming. She said commenting on a child’s body was unacceptable, and that a coach had no business judging family relationships. She arranged a meeting with Emma, Iris, and Jamie.
In that meeting, Emma held to her claim that she was only trying to protect Gia from teasing. Iris replied that Gia had been teased, by Emma. Jamie asked why Emma kept criticizing Iris if she cared so much about Gia.
Bonnie asked how body hair affected Gia’s ability to compete. Emma admitted it didn’t. She also confirmed that neither parent had asked her to talk to Gia about shaving. Bonnie told her plainly that she had crossed a boundary.
Emma became emotional and said she never meant to hurt Gia. Iris reminded her that her daughter had been too afraid to stand up without a towel. Good intentions do not erase the impact of swim coach shaming on a young girl.
Bonnie assured the family that Gia would not have to train with Emma again. After the program’s review, Emma was removed from coaching the youth group. Iris felt relief, not triumph. There was still a family to repair.
Repairing Trust at Home
That weekend, Jamie apologized to Gia. He admitted he had encouraged her mom to stay away from practices because he liked having that time with her.
Gia asked whether her mom had been too busy after all. Jamie told her the truth: Iris had asked to come, and he kept saying they had it covered. He admitted he had been selfish.
Gia told him she loved swimming with him but had wanted her mom there sometimes too. She didn’t forgive him right away. Still, she sat beside him, and they talked about swimming for nearly an hour.
