“Linda,” Richard interrupted, “I saw all three things on your dresser.”
She glared at him, then turned to Jordan.
“After everything you’ve told me about your marriage, you’re defending her?”
“I told you we had arguments.”
“You said you were unhappy!”
“Sometimes I was, Mom. I never said I wanted to leave my wife.”
“Then why did you keep calling me?”
“Because I was upset, and talking to you was easier than dealing with my feelings. That was wrong.”
Linda’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you needed me.”
“I do need you to be my mother. But I don’t need you choosing sides in my marriage.”
He turned toward me.
“I told Mom about our worst days, never our good ones. I made you look like the problem, and I’m sorry.”
Linda stared at the perfume.
“You used to bring me flowers, Jordan. Remember our Sunday breakfasts? Now I barely see you, and every little surprise is for her.”
Jordan’s expression softened.
“Mom, I know we don’t spend as much time together anymore. But she’s my wife. Loving her doesn’t mean I’ve stopped loving you.”
He glanced at the perfume.
