I thought my son’s girlfriend was joking when she said he had to pay her for meals. Then Ethan reached into a kitchen drawer and pulled out a folded paper. Her smile disappeared. “Don’t you dare show her that!” What was she so afraid I’d see?

My son had been living with his girlfriend for two months before he finally invited me over.

I brought his favorite apple pie.

But when I opened their refrigerator, I found two eggs, half a carton of milk, and almost nothing else.

His girlfriend, Vanessa, smiled.

“His salary’s already gone. Until he can pay me per meal again, the kitchen’s closed!”

I stared at her.

Then my son opened a kitchen drawer and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

“Don’t you dare show her that!” Vanessa shouted.

I had never heard her sound so frightened.

And I had no idea what my son was about to reveal.

Ethan was 27 when he moved in with Vanessa.

He had a good job, paid his bills, and had always been careful with money.

When he told me they were getting an apartment together, I congratulated him.

I missed him, of course.

But I didn’t want to become the mother who appeared uninvited or questioned every decision.

So I waited.

When Ethan finally called, he sounded unusually serious.

“Saturday at three, Mom. Can you come?”

“Of course. Should I bring anything?”

“Your apple pie?”

I laughed. “You didn’t even have to ask.”

Their apartment was small but cheerful.

There were flowers by the window, matching cushions on the couch, and photographs of the happy couple.

Vanessa greeted me with a hug.

“It’s so nice to finally meet you, Helen!”

But Ethan’s hug was different.

He held on a moment too long.

“You okay, sweetheart?” I whispered.

“Yeah, Mom. I’m glad you’re here.”

He didn’t look glad.

He looked exhausted.

I carried the pie into the kitchen.

“Where should I put this?”

“The fridge,” Vanessa said.

I opened the door.

And stopped.

The shelves were nearly bare.

“Have you two been too busy to shop?”

Vanessa laughed.

“Ethan’s paycheck is already gone.”

Then she explained that she charged him for every meal she cooked.

Since he was behind on his payments, she wouldn’t prepare anything else until payday.

She glanced at my pie.

“At least he’ll have something to eat tonight.”

I slowly closed the refrigerator.

“You charge him for dinner?”

“Cooking is work. I’m not his personal chef.”

I understood that.

Ethan could cook, and Vanessa wasn’t obligated to serve him.

But why was my son apparently waiting for his next paycheck just to eat?

Before I could ask, Ethan walked in.

Vanessa smiled.

“I told your mother about your little payment problem.”

Ethan looked at her for a long moment.

Then he opened a drawer and took out a folded paper.

“Actually, Mom, there’s something you should see.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Don’t you dare show her that.”

Ethan set the paper on the table.

“You’re right. Someone else is joining us this afternoon.”

“Who?” Vanessa demanded.

The doorbell rang.

A woman stood outside carrying a container of cookies.

“Hello! I’m Margaret. Vanessa’s mother.”

Vanessa sprang from her chair.

“Mom? What are you doing here?”

“Ethan invited me. He thought it was time our families met.”

Margaret looked genuinely delighted.

Then she noticed our faces.

“Is something wrong?”
